ORGANIZATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
- To position Northern Ontario as a production-friendly region for filmmakers, film and television production companies, independent film producers, TV networks, commercial producers and other media arts creators.
- To act as an unbiased and objective facilitator of film and television industry activities between industry and government.
- To develop projects and events which promote the growth of the Northern Ontario film industry, including promotional, professional development, and outreach events.
- To oversee the implementation of these projects in coordination with CION’s Workforce Development, Communications & Development, and Programs & Events Officers.
Eligible candidates should have significant professional experience in the film and television industry and knowledge of and experience in not-for-profit organizational management. The ideal candidate would also have experience in public relations and a track record of successfully encouraging the delivery of world-class customer service.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Through consultation with film industry stakeholders and in co-ordination with CION’s Associate Executive Director and Associate Managing Director, asses the gaps, needs and current trends of the Northern Ontario film and television production industry.
- Develop and oversee CION’s film and television production industry activities; including outreach, development and attraction/promotional activities (ie. Project Pitch Exchange, industry marketplace events, Cinema Summit), setting measures of success to ensure CION’s programming contributes to continued economic growth for the film industry.
- Act as the unbiased contact and primary source of information for inquiries related to film, television and media arts production for film industry stakeholders including film producers, municipal economic development officers, and film vendors, with the goal of encouraging economic development.
- Serve as CION’s point person on film/TV production activities, including promoting Northern Ontario success stories (ie. Production activity, crew development, CION’s new workforce/development programming) during outreach and consultation.
- In co-ordination with CION’s Associate Executive Director and Associate Managing Director, plan, track, and reconcile project budgets for CION’s project-based programming and initiatives, ensuring planned budgets meet both CION’s key success objectives and needs identified through industry analysis.
- Provide context and measures of success from facilitated events and programming to the Associate Managing Director and the Communications & Development Officer, to assist in reporting outcomes of all film and television sector events, programs and services.
- Oversee the development of strategies for regional stakeholders to attend key industry events including annual film industry conferences, to promote Northern Ontario as a production friendly region and secure inbound productions.
- Act as a direct liaison for key industry stakeholders and oversee the support activities of the Communications & Development and Programs & Events Officers in promoting key events and facilitating logistics.
- Set goals and measures of success for CION’s Programs & Event Officer and Workforce Development Officers in maintaining CION’s existing film program resources (ie. the Crew Database, Hotlist, It Came From The North production list, CION website film resources etc.) and developing new resources.
- Oversee internal projects contributing to the development of regional production resources and film vendors and consult on external infrastructure development projects.
- In co-ordination with CION’s Communications & Development Officer, develop CION’s promotional strategy and key marketing goals for promoting CION’s film and television industry programming, oversee and approve materials drafted by the Communications & Development Officer to ensure all promotional materials are meeting CION’s organizational goals and measures of success.
- Oversee the participation of the initiative’s Film and Music Advisory Committee (FMAC) and lead regular meetings, setting meeting agendas in coordination with CION’s Lead, Music Sector Development. Facilitate relationships with economic development officers and other industry stakeholders who participate in CION meetings
- Assist as needed in the facilitation and logistics of CION’s major industry events (NOMFA, Cinema Summit, Project Pitch Exchange tours etc.)
INTERACTION WITH PUBLIC
The Film Sector Development Lead will interact frequently and directly with key CION partners, along with support staff, industry stakeholders, and the public at large.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
There are no day-to-day physical demands associated with the Film Sector Development Lead position. From time to time there will be setup related to various activities, including hospitality events, that CION is involved in, that will require the position’s attention.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
In general, Cultural Industries Ontario North operates on a 35-hour work week, 9AM to 5PM from Monday to Friday (with an hour for lunch). Due to the dictates of CION activities, the Film Sector Development Lead can expect to occasionally work unusual hours, mainly evenings and weekends.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
The Film Sector Development Lead is required to demonstrate the following abilities/knowledge base:
- Significant professional experience in the film and television industry;
- Demonstrates strategic planning and communication skills;
- Solid, hands-on, budgeting, project and resource management;
- A high level of administrative experience; including creating project budgets;
- Direct experience working within the local, regional, provincial and/or national film and television production industry; including but not limited to working with producers, film vendors, film crew, unions, workforce development agencies, film commissions and public funding bodies;
- Strong corporate communications background and experience in public speaking;
- Promotional experience, event/conference planning and facilitation;
- University degree; College diploma or equivalent relevant work experience
- Ability to convey a vision of the organization’s mission and strategic plan
- Ability to maintain an organized and efficient work environment
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to create and maintain partnerships with a wide variety of people and organizations
- Outstanding organization and time management skills with the ability to multi-task effectively
- Available to travel occasionally
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and database management;
- A high level of initiative and attention to detail;
- A valid G Class License.
Bilingualism will be considered an asset for this position, as Cultural Industries Ontario North (CION) operates on a bilingual basis.
