May 11 Sundance Screenwriters Cafe This event will run weekly every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to May 22.
May 12 Creative Forces - A Conversation with Jess and Joel Edwards of Evolve Studios This FREE event will feature Joel and Jesse Edwards, founders of Evolve Studios, discussing their newest project, Distance, a timely film aiming to send a message of hope during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was written, produced, and filmed with the ALEXA Mini during a short window in March 2020, so the filmmakers will give a behind the scenes look at what it was like to make a film while following strict government and CDC precautions. This event will be moderated by Mike Nichols, AbelCine Business Development Manager, with time for Q&A throughout. Event runs from 1:30 to 3 pm.
May 12 Sundance Collab- Screenwriting: Writing Your First Act This is the last day to submit an application. Course runs from June 2 to July 26. Learn how to give shape and form to your completed screenplay outline with an experienced screenwriter as your guide. During this eight-week course you will learn techniques for crafting scenes, developing character, and writing dialogue as you continue to hone the working draft of your screenplay’s first act. Sessions will include presentation and discussion on topics tailored to course participants, and breakout sessions to give feedback on individual works-in-progress. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project.

May 21 Sundance Collab - Advisor Q&A Live: Trey Ellis on Building Your Storytelling Toolbox On from 4 to 5 pm EDT, this Q&A will be limited to the first 500 participants to join. award-winning filmmaker, novelist, playwright, essayist and professor of screenwriting at Columbia University, Trey Ellis (HOLY MACKEREL, THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN, GOOD FENCES). Trey will guide us through how to build your storytelling toolbox, a resource for techniques and strategies that will inspire your screenwriting process and strengthen your stories. We’ll learn effective practices for adapting material and hear his thoughts for channeling your emotions into your work. The webinar will be recorded for viewing for those unable to attend the live event. This Advisor Q&A Live webinar is free.

May 26 Sundance Collab - TV Writing: Core Elements This is the last day to submit an application. Course runs from June 16 to August 9. Learn the core elements of writing a TV pilot with an accomplished TV writer as your guide. In this live, online course, you will create an outline for an original pilot script and learn a set of tools to help you ask the important questions of every scene and character that will get you past "stuck" when writing future episodes. These eight weeks will cover developing characters, pilot structure, establishing tableau and tone, beat sheets and outlines. Sessions include presentation, discussion, and interactive exercises. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project. The course will be held live in our virtual classroom. All sessions are recorded for registered participants who are unable to attend live.
May 27 Sundance Collab - Screenwriting: Core Elements This is the last day to submit an application. Course runs from June 17 to July 29. Learn the core elements of writing a screenplay for a feature film, with an accomplished screenwriter as your guide. In this live, online course, you will develop a new script idea into an outline that can be used to write your first draft. The eight weeks will cover character development, theme, story arcs and visual storytelling. Sessions include presentation, discussion, and interactive exercises. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project. The course will be held live in our virtual classroom. All sessions are recorded for registered participants who are unable to attend live.
May 27, 28 DOC Institute Industry Exchange Series Part 1 & 2 Register now for our 2-part series on production and post-production which bring together filmmakers and industry experts to share ideas, concerns, and solutions during these uncertain times. Zoom meetings on from 4 to 5:15 pm both days. Cost is $10/session for non-members; $15/both sessions.
May 28 Webinar: Brit Marling on the Art of Acting, Writing, and Collaboration As creators, we can continue to practice the art and craft of writing to help us tell our stories during these unprecedented times. Join us for a very special conversation with award-winning writer, actress, and producer Brit Marling (SOUND OF MY VOICE, ANOTHER EARTH, THE OA). Through an exploration of her work as co-creator, writer, and star of the Netflix series, THE OA, Brit will share her advice on the art of acting, writing, and collaboration. We'll dive into writing compelling characters and building their story worlds, discuss her prep and rehearsal process as an actress, and learn how she's cultivated rich, collaborative relationships along the way.

June 17 Sundance Collab - Doc Storytelling: Developing Your Story This is the last day to submit an application. Course runs from July 8 to August 31. Learn the steps for developing a feature documentary--from conception and prep through production--with an accomplished documentary filmmaker as your guide. Participants should come prepared for this eight-week live, online course with a project that you plan to produce and/or direct. Crafting a compelling proposal for funders is a key goal of the course. Sessions include presentations, discussion, interactive exercises, and a panel discussion with documentary funders. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project. The course will be held live in our virtual classroom. All sessions are recorded for registered participants who are unable to attend live.

July 21 Sundance Collab - Crafting Your Short Film Course runs from July 21 to September 13. Learn the steps for creating your short film from defining your creative vision and refining your script through assembling your cast and crew, production planning, and post-production. A Sundance award-winning filmmaker will guide this eight-week fundamentals course which is ideal for writer/directors looking to make their first short fiction film. You should come with a completed draft of a short film script (up to 15 pages) that you want to make. Sessions include presentations, interactive exercises, a guest session with a short film programmer from the Sundance Film Festival, and a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project.
August 2020
TBA Sundance Collab - TV Writing Crafting Your Pilot Learn how to give shape and form to the outline of your pilot with an experienced TV writer as your guide. In this live, online course you will cover openings and endings, dialogue, and sharpening characters. Sessions include presentations, discussion, and interactive exercises. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project.  Eligibility Requirement: Completion of Sundance Co//ab TV Writing Core Elements course or completion of at least one pilot script as the writer.
August 11 Screenwriting: Core Elements (Sept. 2020) Learn the core elements of writing a screenplay for a feature film, with an accomplished screenwriter as your guide. In this live, online course, you will develop a new script idea into an outline that can be used to write your first draft. The eight weeks will cover character development, theme, story arcs and visual storytelling. Sessions include presentation, discussion, and interactive exercises. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project. Application deadline is 2 pm on August 11. Course runs for eight weeks, Sept 1 - Oct 25.

May 11 Sundance Collab - Directing Actors This is the last day to register. The course runs from June 1 to July 20. Eliciting the performance you want from an actor is one of the most important roles of a director -- and one of the most challenging. In this live, online eight-week course, acclaimed Los Angeles acting coach, Lisa Robertson, will guide participants in exercises and teach them how to break down their script for narrative and psychological transitions. She will explain the fundamentals of directing actors: how to communicate and how to approach rehearsals and the set. Participants will leave with critical tools they will need to direct actors and more confidence in their leadership on set. The course will be held live in our virtual classroom. All sessions are recorded for registered participants who are unable to attend live.

Course runs from June 11 to August 2. Learn the core elements of directing fiction films—from pre-production to working with actors and more—with an experienced director as your guide. During this eight-week course intended for those new to directing, you’ll learn how to assemble your crew, work with actors, and translate work from script-to-screen by directing and filming a scene. (Note: this final exercise may change based on CDC social distancing guidelines at the time of the course). Sessions include presentations, group discussions, and interactive exercises. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project.

Join Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film team for part one of the day (1:00 p.m. EST), where we'll discuss building your body of work as a documentary filmmaker with Cecilia Aldarondo, director of MEMORIES OF A PENITENT HEART, and developing productive, healthy relationships with your creative team with Jacqueline Olive, Don Bernier, and Bob Edwards from the documentary ALWAYS IN SEASON. Join us for a culminating event with filmmaker Mark Cousins in conversation with Tabitha Jackson, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. Learn the hands-on tools of creative producing for independent fiction films – from development to financing to budgeting and more – with an accomplished producer as your guide. This eight-week live online course will cover pitching and development, financing, scheduling, and festival strategy and distribution. Sessions include presentations, discussion, and interactive exercises. The course concludes with a one-on-one mentoring session focused on your project.
